A package provides protection of the product and communication to the user (through graphics, labels, and so on). The use of flexible packaging has grown faster than other forms in recent years. This is put into perspective starting with a brief history of packaging and a discussion of the benefits that packaging brings throughout the value chain. The key players in the value chain (consumers, end users, and converters) have different needs. The package engineer must translate these needs into engineering specifications. Assembling specialized layers that provide sealing, barrier, or abuse resistance into multilayer film structures allow these needs to be met in the most cost-effective manner. Future trends will drive further specialization, which underscores the need for fundamental understanding of flexible packaging, etc.......................
